Meet the New CEO
Kathryn C. Brown is taking the helm as the new CEO of the Internet Society effective 1 January. Here are a few key questions about why she chose to work with the organization, and what she hopes to help it accomplish in the coming months and years.
Q. Why did you decide to join the Internet Society?
A. I have admired the work of the Internet Society for many years. Lynn St. Amour's leadership has resulted in the high esteem in which the Society is held by the Internet community. Her stewardship of ISOC has been extraordinary, and the organization is well-positioned to continue its important work to help foster an open, accessible, and trusted global Internet. I look forward to helping ISOC grow as an unrelenting advocate in this quest.
Q. How does your experience complement the organization?
A. My background includes an in-depth knowledge of global Internet governance policy development, corporate responsibility initiatives that have aided in the Internet’s global expansion, and a keen understanding of the stakeholders debating the future of the Internet. I’ve worked extensively in change management across communities, businesses, and policy, occasioned by the disruptive power of the Internet.
In addition, I have managed extensive philanthropic investments in Internet development that have supported a wide range of causes related to global education, healthcare, and economic development. ISOC operates at the nexus of technology, policy, and development and I am excited to work with the Board, Staff, Chapters, and Members to continue to make an impact in these critical areas.
Q. What is your vision for the organization, and what do you hope to achieve during your tenure?
A. While there are many essential areas of emphasis for the future, I’d like to start by highlighting three. First, Internet governance is a critical topic, and I expect ISOC to continue our active, persistent engagement in the policy arena with respect to the dialogue around Internet governance. This is a crucial time in the Internet’s development, and we will work across the multistakeholder community to address issues, while remaining focused on preserving the open, global Internet and keeping the Internet strong.
In addition, I am firmly committed to the special relationship ISOC shares with the IETF, and I want to help it foster an open approach to technical developments and standards that allow for permission-less, bottom-up innovation.
Finally, ISOC’s grass roots activity can be amplified through greater engagement with Chapters and Members to further integrate efforts into a force for advocacy and community. A shared vision of keeping the Internet open unites ISOC’s global network, and we will work together to advance ubiquitous, worldwide access to the Internet and provide the tools needed at the local level to make full use of its potential.
Q. What is your position on key issues facing the industry?
A. I’ve had a long-standing relationship with the Internet Society. My views on the key issues facing the industry today are consistent with the principles of openness, accessibility, and trust that the Internet Society was founded on and has advocated for over the past 20 years. The Internet faces escalating challenges today, specifically in the areas of privacy, security, and Internet governance. The Internet Society serves a unique role at the heart of the Internet’s development and I look forward to continuing this tradition and working across our community with the Staff, Board, Chapters, and Members to make an even greater impact in the years ahead.
